Did you know Cranstons produce only smiley sausages? Primary school pupils in Penrith get a lesson from master butcher – David Law.

Earlier this month David Law – Production Director at Cranstons visited Beaconside C of E Primary School and Acorn Nursery in Penrith to show the pupils how to make burgers and Cumberland sausages.

The children aged 4 and 5 who have been learning about food and farming were told about the local farms Cranstons work with, how the sausages are made, how they are displayed in the counter, cooked and finally eaten! Every child had also the opportunity to press their own beef burger and take it home to cook with parents after the class.

One of the main highlights was when David told the children the story of smiley and sad sausages. The pupil’s reactions were absolutely priceless! He then explained why it’s important to have a good day at Cranstons and make only smiley sausages and not the sad ones!

Another amusing moment was when the kids had a chance to try butchers chainmail. Each child had a chance to put it on and feel the weight of it. They all agreed it wasn’t that heavy. David also found out that most of their dads need to get chainmail because they always cut themselves.

Dave’s visit was enjoyed by pupils and teachers alike. Philippa Graham – teacher said:

‘We had a WONDERFUL day with Dave, he’s a natural in the classroom! The burgers we were given after classroom were so yummy! It was great to see kids interacting with Dave and asking a lot of questions about local food’

David had a brilliant time with the kids ‘I have really enjoyed working with Beaconside C of E Primary School and Acorn Nursery. I hope that my work with local schools like this one provide real value to the school community. The pupils were an absolute credit to the school, they looked so happy and eager to learn! ’

The day was a fantastic success for Cranstons and we can’t wait for more projects with the schools in the future!
