Cranstons on the Telly!
At Cranstons, we’re proud of our heritage and the quality of our products, especially our famous Cumberland sausage. Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with ITV about what makes our Cumberland sausage stand out and why it continues to be a customer favourite.
ITV reached out to us to explore the origins of the Cumberland sausage. Their journalist, Alice, spent a morning at our Penrith production facility, where she met our Sausage Supervisor, Neil, and Stephen, our Production Butchery Supervisor, to see firsthand how we craft our sausages. She then met Luke, Butchery Supervisor in our Cumbrian Food Hall, and filmed customers buying the product from our renowned butchery counter.
Our Cumberland sausage is crafted using a recipe that has remained unchanged for over a century. Made with 83% high-quality pork, this sausage is renowned for its signature flavour and the traditional thick and thin varieties we offer. Our dedication to local sourcing and the use of PGI-protected methods ensures that every bite is a reflection of our commitment to quality.
James Cranston, our Senior Commercial Manager, said; “It was great to talk with ITV about our Cumberland sausage, which is really at the heart of what we do. We’ve kept the same recipe for over a century because it works—it’s got that perfect balance of flavour and texture. What makes it even better is hearing how much people enjoy it; whether they’re trying it for the first time or it’s a family tradition. Sharing that passion for great food is what it’s all about!”
The Cumberland sausage has long been a cornerstone of British cuisine, with its origins rooted in the county of Cumbria. Known for its distinctive coiled shape and coarse texture, this sausage boasts a unique blend of spices that has been passed down through generations. The PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status further ensures that any product labelled as Cumberland sausage must adhere to traditional methods and originate from Cumbria, safeguarding its authenticity.
Peter Potts, our Senior Retail Area Manager, said; “Our Cumberland sausage is a testament to the care and craftsmanship that goes into everything we do at Cranstons. Using the finest quality pork and a recipe that’s been trusted for over 100 years, we create a sausage with incredible flavour and texture. We’re proud of the tradition it represents and the high standards we uphold to ensure every product meets our customers’ expectations”
At Cranstons, we pride ourselves not only on the authenticity of our sausage but also on our commitment to supporting farmers and maintaining the highest standards of meat quality. We believe that these values are what make our Cumberland sausage stand out, and we are honoured to share our story with ITV, championing local food traditions.
