Cumbrian Food Hall team host local food students
Our Cumbrian Food Hall Team were delighted to host the Year 10 Food Preparation and Nutrition students from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGs) to our Cumbrian Food Hall this month.
We welcomed four different student groups, who came to learn about sustainability and our deep-rooted commitment to sourcing locally.
The pupils enjoyed a butchery demo, learning how to fillet a chicken. They then visited Fyne Fish’s counter, and learnt how to fillet a fish. The butchery and Fyne Fish team talked to them about local-sourcing, and food sustainability. They enjoyed sampling our sausage and award-winning burgers.
David Sutton, butcher at our Cumbrian Food Hall, said: “Having the Year 10 groups come in and see firsthand how to butcher a chicken is a fantastic opportunity for them, and gives us a chance to pass our knowledge and values onto the next generation, and it was a pleasure to see them taking such an interest in sustainability,”
Sharon Heron of Fyne Fish said: “It was a great chance for the kids to see a fish filleted by a fishmonger, which is something of a dying trade. Hopefully we inspired some to explore opportunities they may not have otherwise considered. They were all very engaged, and asked lots of questions, it was great to see,”
At the Cumbrian Food Hall, we showcase our butchery and delicatessen ranges, and produce from over 100 local suppliers. We are proud to work with 6 local beef farms, and a proud to buy our lamb through Penrith and Hexham marts. Café Oswalds sits above the Food Hall, and serves dishes made using the produce downstairs.
Sheila Monkhouse, Food Technology teacher at QEGs; “A visit to Cranstons with our year 10 food preparation and nutrition students is a great way for them to broaden their understanding of sustainable food production. In addition, the expert staff in the butchery department and on the fish counter, are able to reinforce important food preparation skills of filleting a fish and portioning a chicken.”
Hosting school and community groups is part of our wider commitment to the communities we serve.
